Finding Direction

I used to spend so much time reacting and responding

to everyone else that my life had no direction. Other

people's lives, problems, and wants set the course for my life.

Once I realised it was okay for me to think about and identify

what I wanted, remarkable things began to take place in my life.

Today, I will pay attention to setting a course of action for my life,

rather than letting others control my life and affairs.

My Song

In my songs, I have voiced Your spring flowers

and given rhythm to Your rustling leaves.

I have sung into the hush of Your night

and the peace of your morning.

The thrill of the first summer rains has passed into

my tunes and the waving of the autumn harvest.

Let not my song cease.

- Rabindranath Tagore

On Love - Happy Valentines Days

When love beckons to you follow him,

Though his ways are hard and steep.

And when his wings enfold you yield to him,

Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.

And when he speaks to you believe in him,

Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.

For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you.

Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.

Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,

So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.

Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.

He threshes you to make you naked.

He sifts you to free you from your husks.

He grinds you to whiteness.

He kneads you until you are pliant,

And then he assigns you to his sacred fire,

That you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast.

All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart,

And in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart.

But if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure,

Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor,

Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of laughter,

And weep, but not all of your tears.

Loves gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.

Love possess not nor would it be possessed, for love is sufficient unto love.

When you love you should not say, 'God is in my heart', but rather,

'I am in the heart of God'.

And think not you can direct the course of love, for love,

If it finds you worthy, directs your course.

Love has no other desire but to fulfil itself.

But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:

To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.

To know the pain of too much tenderness.

To be wounded by your own understanding of love, and to bleed willingly and joyfully.

To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving.

To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy.

To return home at eventide with gratitude, and then to sleep

With a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

- Kahlil Gibran

More than Comfort

When I am feeling depressed, I repeat to myself statements such as these:

"Pain is the touchstone of progress"

"Fear no evil"

"This too shall pass"

"This experience can be turned to benefit"

These fragments of prayer bring far more than mere comfort.

They keep me on track of right acceptance.

They break up my compulsive themes of guilt, depression,

rebellion and pride and sometimes they endow me with

the courage to change the things I can,

and the wisdom to know the difference.

A Human Being

A human being is part of the whole.

He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something

separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of consciousness.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires

and to affection for a few persons nearest to us.

- Albert Einstein

12 Signs of a Spiritual Awakening

An increased tendency to let things happen rather than make them happen.

Frequent attacks of smiling.

Feelings of being connected with others and nature.

Frequent overwhelming episodes of appreciation.

A tendency to think and act spontaneously rather than from fears based on past experience.

An unmistakable ability to enjoy each moment.

A loss of ability to worry.

A loss of interest in interpreting the actions of others.

A loss of interest in judging others.

A loss of interest in judging self.

Gaining the ability to love without expecting anything in return.

On Pleasure

Pleasure is a freedom-song,

But it is not freedom.

It is the blossoming of your desires,

But it is not their fruit.

It is a depth calling unto a height,

But it is not the deep nor the high.

It is the caged taking wing,

But it is not space encompassed.

Ay, in very truth, pleasure is a freedom-song.

And I fain would have you sing it with fullness of heart;

Yet I would not have you lose your hearts in the singing.

- Kahlil Gibran

A Door Opens

A door opens in the center of our being,

and we seem to fall through it into immense depths,

which although they are infinite, are still accessible to us.

All eternity seems to have become ours in this one placid and breathless contact.

- Thomas Merton

Dare to Risk

To love is to risk not being loved in return.

To try is to risk failure.

To hope is to risk despair.

To give is to risk receiving.

To live is to risk death.

But the greatest risk of all is to risk nothing.

For the person who risks nothing, is nothing and has nothing.

Only a person who risks is truly free.

Today's Centering Thought

When I look in the mirror, who do I really see? My own true reflection or projections of my fears and worries? In this moment I will hold the possibility that I am just as nature had created me, long before I started to see myself through the lenses of the world. In this moment I will gently look at myself with a loving heart felt gaze, honouring the person I truly am, without all the masks and identifications.

Choose words that resonate and speak more deeply to you. Today's mantra: I love and see myself with compassion and kindness.
